EU-Funded GARDMED Project

A delegation composed of 10 international representatives visited Gnien Luqa Briffa in Zejtun on Wednesday 18th April in connection with the GARDMED Project. This EU-Funded project is made up of a consortium of 4 partners; the University of Catania, the University of Malta, the Floriana Local Council and the Municipality of Syracuse. This project seeks to create a network of gardens between Malta and Sicily which will all form part of an integrated tourist circuit. It aims to promote and conserve the natural and cultural heritage of Maltese and Sicilian gardens so as to become a resource for the country in terms of their cultural, environmental social and economic value.

For this project Dr. Buhagiar, a representative of the University of Malta, proposed Gnien Luqa Briffa, also known as tal-Kmandant to the Zejtun Local Council. This garden was designed and built in 1802 and has various characteristics, some of which are distinct, such as a neoclassical main gate and a prominent coat of arms of King George III displayed on the main entrance.
